Design
Hell Part 2 of 2 21
NOV 07
As you can see,
this design career sounds like a path to a shorter life. Another
point I wanna make is that once you have graduated as a designer..
you are ironically NOT a designer.. Customers and bosses sees
you as a Photoshop / Dreamweaver / Freehand Operator.. someone
that knows how to use the program because he doesn’t. Let
me elaborate. Once
you have designed say an ad, the customer or boss will have
the liberty to change ANYTHING they want even though it does
not make design sense or even common sense. All of your 3 years
of training will have to go down the drain because bosses thinks
that they know more than you and insist that the white text
will still be readable if placed on yellow graphics. Or they
would tell you to squeeze a million words in a small newspaper
ad because they believe that is how to get their money’s
worth… Its like going to the doctor and instead of the
doctor prescribing the exact medication the patient needs, the
patient instructs the doctor what sort of medication he wants
because he is a paying customer. Can you see the messed up logic? |

I
have seen a perfectly awesome design being battered into pieces
by these bosses or customers who think they know what they are
doing. And I can say my personal work are far better than the
commercial one because when working on my personal project,
I have absolute creative freedom. I was lucky enough to work
for a company that acknowledge my expertise and they give the
freedom 98% of the time to do whatever design I want. And that
company is the time I work in the US for a year or so. |

Here
is where I met Dan. |

And
to put salt to the graphic design wound, these changes from
customers and bosses come with a deadly force. This is the one
that finally breaks the designer’s back. Imagine working
on an ad for 3 hours and ignorant customers/bosses keep changing
it until next month. From changing the text size to placing
graphics from left to right… they practically mess everything
up even though the design look great to begin with. Now imagine
if you have 100 ads in your inbox. That’s right. Welcome
to Design Hell. This analogy is the same as someone who buys
a cup of tea from the coffee shop and wants the tea to be “revised”
millions of times to suit his taste buds. Please don’t
attempt on doing this stunt because not only you will be banned
from the coffeshop, you will also be poured with hot scalding
Milo. But for designers, this vile culture is norm.. they bite
the bullet and keep on going. |

If you are still not convinced
on how the design career suck and how it sucked bad is to
look at designers themselves. Most of them are job hopping
as I type this and some are opting to work freelance like
as if it’s a better choice.. Its not, but at least you
get sleep. Most of my friends are beginning to change their
line of work. A friend of mine who have truckloads of Art
trophies accumulated since he was a kid, quit his design job
and now in RETAIL. Another guy I know who worked for a design
company and even got promoted as a senior designer is now
working in a BANK. Another guy has shifted to sales. Another
girl designer is contemplating to quit.
So
there you have it folks. You can believe what you want to
believe.. you can hear them naysayers say.. “But at
my job, I can go off at 4pm what..” or “My brother
is earning 10k as a designer” blah blah.. these are
exceptions and perhaps they can also be lies but bottomline
is, the points I mentioned are hardcore facts many cannot
stomach. I know you like art and I deeply believe YOU ARE
TALENTED. But I just wanna give you a brief look and the crap
that awaits you if still insist on following your passion.
But
then again, some of you may say..

Haahaha
this statement I have heard numerous times. The sort of people
who comes up with this sort of statement is like a hermit who
lives in a well. Creative jobs creates video games, movies,
quality tv shows, print ads, sets up brands.. We are talking
about million dollar industries here. Who the heck do you think
draws Ryu’s toes when he does his Hadoken? Designers.
Art is not about a painting on the wall anymore. Secondary school
Art should change and get with the times.. instead of shading
a bloody eggplant or make a bloody Batik, they should learn
how to make a logo or have a go at promoting a product etc.
Creative job pays but unfortunately just not in Singapore..
and who is the core root for this decay? I will write about
that soon. |

|
|

|
So
to conclude, if you are a Secondary student and you want to get
into the Design school in whatever art college, you must be prepared
for a job that: 1)
Makes you do OT without OT pay.
2) No Time Offs.
3) Must be okay to sleep in the office.
4) Be aware that you will have to do A LOT of changes/ revisions
to your work.
5) Must constantly keep up and learn new graphic software.
6) Art school is expensive. You have to buy A LOT of mounting
boards which cost about $3 each, Airguns, PCs. Etc.
And
if you are already neck deep in an Art college, I just gotta
wish you guys the very best and if ANY better opportunity comes
along the way, you better grab it and make the switch!

agree
on articles, wanna go aim to be an Art Director
Nur:
May
I compliment you on your light-hearted illustartions to
get by my hellish work week. I'm a designer by profession
and how I hate it. My only solution
to get out is going back to advertising school and hopefully
upgrade my creative sparks to be an Art
Director in the |

advertising
field;
and yes, yes advertising is just as bad, if not worst. Lest,
design grids and arrow cursors would cease to haunt my dreams.
I
read your post on how vicious the industry is and may I add
my five cents worth - the local market is spoilt rotten! The
very reason why clients and/or bosses-who-startup-design-
companies-though-they-major-in-business/marketing torments designers
to do numerous revisions is due to the fact our past predecessors
allow such culture. Clients have come to terms they are the
"hands" controlling us designers like wooden puppets
on strings. Upon knowing their "power" to increase
font size three times bigger or shift image 5.567cm to the left,
these closet-designers request for tasteless revisions, hence
us, the humble designers are slaved into production technicians.
Does
this industry thrive only for the young and foolish? Are we
cursed for taking the path less trotted, suffering for our art,
this case commercial art, earning less, working more? I detest
the quality of life going down the rut, day to day worried sick
if we miss the courier to deliver artwork on time. And, can
we withstand sacrificing quality time for work? Maybe yes for
now, but how bout the future, wrinkled and hunched, fussing
over pantone charts.
I
believe your comrades who quit the creative industry despite
their talents are shedding their dreams for a practical life
paperclipped with a cushy paycheck. Heck, perhaps even both
us might just drop everything and join the bandwagon if we don't
rebel against the norm. |

"My

Ermm.. in my opinion, I don't think going back to school
and being an Art Director is the way to go. |
|
|
|
|
|
| |
|
Not only you will be wasting
more money on the "investment", a job as an Art Director
is almost not guaranteed. There is alot of things to consider
in order to be an Art Director.. and I don't just mean having
a killer portfolio. Example: Even if you can perform digital
black magic with Photoshop and Freehand, if the company you
work with already have an Art Director, you will be stuck as
a Art Director ASSISTANT as long as it needs be because how
many Art Directors can one company have?
I remember an article I read
on the local newspaper about this top guy managing the Singapore
Zoological Gardens. He shared his story on how he started at
a modest position and after years goes by his seniors decided
to quit and everytime they quit, he moved one space up the Zoological
corporate ladder.. Until one fine day, he manage to find himself
in the managing office. See what I mean.. if the top guys didn't
budge he would still be scrapping elephant dung instead of planning
landscapes for African Giraffes.
I think, if you really insist
on sticking with this creative ambition of yours and you wanna
take 100% creative control, you can always start your own design
business. That way, you can write anything you want on your
name card.. you don't have to wait 15 bloody years to be an
Art Director, you can be an Art Director NOW.. Heck, check out
my namecard..

shoved
her body underneath the company's sofa.
Not as scary as the

typography.
But
beware, she also like to pull the plug on your PC, eliminating
5 hours of work because you simply forgot to save. Nobody knows
what her last words was but its a tie between "Aiyah, this
one change 35 times already you know." and "Papa,
I sorry I wasted your hard earn money on an Art school." |

agree
on articles, fresh design garduate problems
The Creature:
Gosh..u
gota keep writing about the BS industry for designers
in Singapore! Its f'reakin hilariously true to the bone.
Being a designer myself, the best work Iv created in a
'creative' sense was all in school, and after
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
|
being
in the industry for well over 3 yrs, im seriously dried like a
prune of creative freedom.
Someone sent me an email writing
about how designers in Singapore have lifestyles and work ethics
no diff from prostitutes, that was honestly too much of a pinch
of salt to handle, whereas yours brings more realism. I enjoyed
reading the 2 posts =)
I've gone through all that u've
mentioned, and even though Im a senior designer now who has
slightly more say in certain things, I'm not happy. Coz this
wasn't the job I paid so much for in school and worked hard
to do well in my projects to become~ What u said about the employer's
perception of a 'designer' to begin with being thwarped is true.
Perhaps u could post up the recruitment ads for designers these
days to let 'designer wanabes' see how ridiculous and unreal
the criteria is. Employers these days want a robot..a machine
that can do everything and work every hour with no complaints,
know every design software out there, even though they state
'Graphic Designer Wanted, fresh grads welcome', and expect the
poor freshies to already have had 1-2yrs experience. And sometimes
even more ridiculously expect us to know all platforms of 3D
and web developing software. I believe there are product designers,
animators and web developers for that~
Im rather bemused as to why these
ads specifically state they need someone creative when we all
know that at the end of the day all the bosses take creative
direction from only one party, ie: client aka non designer.
Of course there are some design
companies here that practise true design ethics with their designers
(lucky lor), but we know those really are just a few needles
in a haystack. With all these art and design schools popping
up here and there, everyone naturally thinks they can be a designer
and that the industry is fruitful. Hell even my next door neighbour
who uses photoshop to edit his pictures to look like neoprints
thinks he's a designer! I don't regret
having taken up design in school or being a designer now taking
shit pay working shit hours and listening to shit clients, but
I sure as hell won't be doing this for the rest of my working
life, at least not here~ lol
Looking forward to your next
post on the culprits for the demise...
Cheers,

before I make my decision. The thing is, I did not know of anyone
who was a designer and my parents are supportive in WHATEVER I
do, so I do not have any avenue to ask for feedback. So for those
secondary school kids out there who are waiting for whatever Teh

lah, Visual Comm lah, Media Art lah, Friendster Layout Expert
lah... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Don't study half way then you realise
how shitty it is, then you complain. |

wanna
be a designer, envious of freelancers
Mei Ling:
hi
there, i
have read through your articles and I totally agreed with
you that most empolyers (of course not all) can be quite
tyrannical towards designers. They
tend to believe that all designers
should do whatever
they have |
|
|
|
|
|
| |
|
requested
for at a given time - usally very very short. This is should
say is absurd because some designs need time to be developed.
I
am not a designer, but has always been inspired to be one. Not
because it feels good (thats what I think) to be called a designer
but because i like to play around with designs and to capture
what I think is the best poster/advert design for my product.
I told my boss that I would love to take up design course, he
told me "dont waste time". Of course, I knew why he
said that - because Rome isnt built in one day.
I
had designers who design booklet for me with deadline of less
then a week and charges a good 2 grand for that. I as a marketing
person started to get a little jealous, i was thinking to myself:
why should i be the one to wait till my freelance designer to
knock off at 6pm then i work with him on that???? why? its so
unfair. I'd rather be a designer, 3 short nights and he can
easily earn more then me. Then again, i told my boss that I
think i want to be a designer, my boss said: you can! but do
you have the skill set? Totally, I agreed - we waited because
the designer never fails to produce a piece of good work.
I
think this world is kind of Not-fair. Some unethical employers
tend to drill their designers to the max, paying them just enough
to buy 1 sesami seed. This is inhumane! However, there are still
many fantastic people around who hires freelance designers and
pay a reasonable price. I think the catch of being a designer
is to start off as an employee and eventually turn to be an
employer of your own. This is a precious skillset where no one
can take it away from you. Having this skill set brings you
to many places like being marketeer, branding professional -
if you intend to do something else.
All
in all, i salute all designers. You guys are the hero behind
every pieces of successfully marketed product - but of course
do give some credit to the marketeers as some might be the idea
generator.

DON'T.
I'm not saying that you will not be a good designer, heck I
think you will be great.
But "playing around with designs"
and working on a dateline with endless revisions is a whole
different war game. Trust me on this.. Most designers do not
like their work done commercially.. they are capable in producing
phenomenal work IF given the freedom but in the office everything
is dictated thus turning them into Photoshop technicians.
"I
had designers who design booklet for me with deadline of less

why should i be the one to wait till my freelance designer to

By reading what you wrote, I can sense that this company you
are working with treats its freelancers good. I did a booklet
before plus illustrations.. and got paid less than 2 grand,
and the customer dragged the dateline for weeks. I bet the freelancers
you have right now are very thankful for the "lubang"
they have now and THEY KNOW that the chances of them getting
another gig like this ie; a booklet in less than a week (meaning
little revisions / less demanding customer) and getting 2 grand
for it is not easy to come by.
"Then
again, i told my boss that I think i want to be a designer,
my boss said: you can! but do you have the skill set?"
Actually this skill set your boss is talking about is
easy to attain. I went to school for 3 years and I realised
that the time allocated was not utilise in the best manner.
The 1st year itself was filled with bullshity art history that
you will never use in the office. And they made you make a color
wheel using gauche like as if the Pantone chart does not exist.
Its a way the Art school wanna suck your money dry and at the
same time passion blinds you.
To know what I know right now,
design wise, you just need 1 year tops.. if you are those soak-like-a-sponge-types..
6 months is sufficent. Sometime I do day dream about opening
an Art school called "Evil Bunny's No Bullshit Design School".
You will learn all those computer design stuff from Day 1 and
by the time I'm done with you, you can create your own Flash
Cartoons Hentai because the chances of cartoon porn popping
up on Happeepill is close to zero:P Then I'll make the students
sing "Mary had a Little Lamb" during assembly... I
told you it's gonna be awesome.
"This
is a precious skillset where no one can take it away from you.
Having this skill set brings you to many places like being marketeer,
branding professional - if you intend to do something else."
I totally agree with this... I have seen so many times
my design skills have come in handy. Whenever I have a business
idea.. I can easily make a namecard of my own, and a website..
and viola! A new business emerges! Then if another business
idea hits me, the cycle repeats... like a bad case of menstrual
cramps. But the thing is I don't have to consult and pay designers
to do it for me:D

agree
on articles, Designer themselves to be blamed
Edardy:
I
read your story about designers. Hilariously true. Like
you said, 'hard to stomach' if you are not in the industry,
but unfortunately, true. Can
I advice on designer wannabes or freelancers? The
problem here is I think, are designers themselves. They
do not respect |
|
|
|
|
|
| |
|
their
profession
and their passion. They think they owe bosses their lives. Which
is strange. I have worked in Australia for a year and like you,
I understand that the working ethics and environment is world's
apart.
Here
freelancers and younger designers, want to get as much work
as they can by making themselves super cheap. I think this is
the source of our problem as designers. We need to tell clients,
bosses, the general public, that designers are visual consultants/problem
solvers. you come to us for your communication needs and not
to teach you how to use photoshop. Right? By taking as many
jobs for a penny less, we are neglecting the creative benchmark
where it is 10 years ago. Broken up and eaten away by parasites
(cheap designers and kiam kana clients).
We have to set standards and not make ourselves too cheap just
to get a job. I have set standards in my career. Although
i have lost a few clients and got rejected from several local
medium sized companies, I am happy I do not work for free after
6. I do get paid overtime and my salary has been very fair to
me. It is all about making it clear in the initial stages.
During the interview and when negotiating pay, especially when
you are a freelancer, make sure you ask for overtime pay, so
that you can still work on your other projects. For freelancers
- time is money. Ask for a salary that makes you appear like
you're damn good lah. If you ask for 1200 bucks, might as well
you work at Macdonalds. I think you get even more there and
no overtime. And if they overwork you, complain, complain and
complain. be fair to yoruself and be honest to your bosses.
You'd be surprise at how much they need you as much as you need
them. Employment is a two way street. Bosses should serve to
provide a better environment for employees so that they can
be more productive. Its all for the greater good lah. If bosses
say they can look for someone else, have some pride and leave
immediately (with a smile of course - i've learnt middle fingers
will just come back and bite you in the arse). There's a million
and one design houses in Singapore (especially these days).
So fret not!
If
you want to be too competitive and make yourself cheap so as
to get the job. Go to China and work in any industry for a year.
There you will experience undermarket cutting to give themselves
a competitive edge. Work like a slave and get paid a roof and
2 meals a day (somehow breakfast is not very important there)
That will be the design industry of Sinagpore in less than 5
years if we all keep this mindless competitiveness.
Thank
you for indulging. |

They expect me to charge them 100 bucks for a company identity...
Can you f@@king believe that? How i wish Sg is like overseas where
the bosses treated their designers right with OT pay and benefits.
I think Sg should strongly limit the working hours for every individual
and that includes OT time. Just like what those european countries
do. We are not f@@king robots man.
Singapore design scene is totally crap. Even my lecturers whom

won't be making the same mistake as us. |

contemplating
to go into design
Kenny:
i
strongly applaud your article on your blog with regards
to design hell. it is so god damn true! i had studied
industrial design in poly, was top in class, graduated
with merits and best project award. although with these

strong
accolades,
i did not pursue my design career after my NS but moved to join
the insurance industry as my cousin is recruiting people and i
thought maybe i should give this biz a shot. after working for
2 years, i found this job rather sick and stagnant. to be frank,
the thoughts that had always lingered in my mind to go back design,
had grown stronger recently. after i read your article, i had
wondered whether should i rejoin the design field at all, though
its long hours but i MIGHT enjoy it better than my current job.
one
of a friend of mine just came back from australia not long ago
with first class honours in design degree had also moved on to
other fields. this move was supported with the fact that he thinks
career in design is limited too! is this industry gonna flourish
here in singapore? this had always been a HUGE question mark in
my mind since NS. |
